Existentialism sees solitude as the essence of the human being, essence with which each person comes to the world and travels through life as a separate person. Therefore, many existentialist philosophers emphasize that to face solitude, accept it and learn to direct it in one's own life with autonomy and satisfaction is considered an inherent part of the human condition.13
Other philosophers, like Sartre, believe in an epistemic solitude in which loneliness is a fundamental part of the human condition due to the paradox between the consciousness of people who want a meaning in life, isolation and the nothingness of the universe. 14 Conversely, other existentialist thinkers argue that one could say that human beings actively engage with each other and with the universe as they communicate and create, and loneliness is simply the feeling of being isolated from this process.
Negative feeling of loneliness
Loneliness as a negative trigger in a person's life can be understood as a complex and generally unpleasant emotional response to social isolation. It also usually includes feelings of anxiety due to the lack of connection or communication with other individuals, both in the present and in the future. As such, one who suffers from feelings of loneliness can feel that way even in the presence of other people. Its causes are varied and include a wide range of social, mental, emotional and physical factors.
Various investigations have shown that loneliness prevails in every society, including those who have contracted marriages, who are in a loving relationship, between families, senior citizens and even people with successful careers.15 It has been a topic explored for a long time in the Literature of human beings since classical antiquity. It has also been described as loneliness as a social pain. 16 In short, it is often associated very often in a context of social interaction: "unpleasant experience that occurs when the network of social contacts of an individual is significantly deficient". 17
Common causes
There can be many reasons, as well as many life events that can cause it. One of them may be the lack of friendships during childhood and adolescence, or the physical absence of significant people. At the same time, loneliness can be a symptom of some other social or psychological problem, such as dysthymia or social phobia. In that sense, it can be a consequence of a communication dysfunction, or the result of living in places with low population density in which there are few people with whom to interact.
Many people experience loneliness for the first time by being left alone in the first vital stage of their life (when they are babies). It is also an expected, usually temporary, consequence of a breakup, a divorce or a loss of any long-term important relationship. In these cases, it may be due to the loss of a specific person and the consequent withdrawal of the social group due to the loss associated with it.
People can feel lonely even when surrounded by other people.18 It can even be seen as a social phenomenon, capable of spreading like a disease. When a person in a group begins to feel lonely, this feeling (according to the context in which it is found) could spread to other people, which would increase the risk of everyone feeling lonely.19 It can also happen after the birth of a person. a child (often expressed as a postpartum depression), after marriage or after any other socially disturbing event, such as moving from home to an unknown community, leading to nostalgia.
